What you are actually practicing

Every major sporting event is tied to a place, and the place is not always the country you would guess. The Olympics jump continents every four years, the World Cup visits a new host each time, and tennis and motor racing have traditional homes that barely change.

The questions work because the pairing is fixed rather than random. Once you know that the Tour de France began in France, that Wimbledon is in London, and that the Stanley Cup belongs to ice hockey, you can answer a large share of the set without looking anything up.

How the game works

You are shown an event and four possible hosts. Pick the one it belongs to. A wrong pick shows the answer straight away, so every mistake still teaches you something.

Easy covers the handful of events with the strongest associations. Medium widens the pool. Hard uses the full list, including the more obscure World Cup editions and the traditional venues of tennis and motor racing.

Traditional homes: Wimbledon and the All England Club in London; the Masters at Augusta; the Indy 500 in Indianapolis; the Daytona 500 in Florida; the Ashes between England and Australia; the Copa America for South American national sides; the Stanley Cup for ice hockey; the Tour de France yellow jersey for the overall leader.

How to get faster

Say the whole pairing out loud once. "The Olympic Games in 1936, Berlin" is far stickier than a flash of memory. Most people who struggle with this set have simply never met the less famous host cities, so the fix is exposure rather than effort.

A note on the awkward ones

The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics four times, and Germany has hosted the World Cup as West Germany in 1974 and as unified Germany in 2014. Where a question uses an old name, read it as the name in use at the time.
