Volume of Boxes

Volume is the space inside, and for a box it is always length × width × height. Below: why the multiplication chain has no order to worry about, and how to work backwards when one side is missing.

How to play

Multiply the three dimensions, then tap the volume.

What you are actually practicing

Volume is the space inside a solid, and for any box it is the same product: length times width times height. A cube is just the special case where all three are equal, which is why its volume is a side cubed.

This game drills the product itself, then reverses it — because the reverse direction is where the understanding actually shows.

How the game works

You are shown a volume calculation and four answers. Pick the correct one; a wrong pick reveals it immediately.

Easy uses cubes. Medium adds boxes with three different sides. Hard includes the reverse question, where the volume and two sides are given and one side is missing.

The relationships worth knowing

Cube: 4 × 4 × 4 = 64. A side of four gives a volume of sixty-four.

Box: 5 × 3 × 2 = 30. Order is irrelevant — multiplication is associative, so any grouping gives the same product.

Missing side: if the volume is 120 and two sides are 3 and 4, the third is 120 ÷ 12 = 10.

Strategies that actually raise your score

Multiply the two smaller sides first. 5 × 3 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30. Keeping intermediate numbers small is the main defence against slips under a countdown.

For the reverse question, divide by the product of the known sides. Do not try to guess: 120 ÷ (3 × 4) is one operation, and guessing from the options wastes the clock.

Reject by size before multiplying. A box of 5 × 3 × 2 must be bigger than 15 and, if one side is 2, cannot exceed twice the area of the largest face. Options outside that band are wrong on sight.

Remember the cube shortcut. For 4 × 4 × 4 you do not need three multiplications: 4 × 4 = 16, and 16 × 4 = 64. Same thing, one fewer step to lose.
