WordsA synonym is a word with the same or nearly the same meaning as another. Unlike spelling, there is no single right answer in English — happy has glad, joyful, content, and pleased as neighbours — so this game picks the closest and most standard match and builds the distractors from unrelated meanings.
What is really being trained is precision of meaning. Knowing that difficult and hard are near-equivalents while simple is the opposite is the difference between writing clearly and writing vaguely.
You are given a word and must pick its synonym from four options. Four choices, a countdown, and an immediate reveal when you miss. Your score and best score stay in this browser only.
Easy uses everyday words. Medium widens the pool. Hard uses the full list, including pairs where the synonym is noticeably more formal than the prompt — buy and purchase, stop and cease.
Read all four before answering. The first plausible option is often a deliberate trap; a better match frequently sits third or fourth.
Test each option in a sentence. Substitute it where the original word would go. If the sentence still means the same thing, you have a synonym. If it means the opposite, you have an antonym, which is the most common distractor type here.
Watch the register. Several pairs differ by formality rather than meaning. When the prompt is a plain everyday word, the formal-looking option is usually the intended synonym.
Mistake: picking the antonym. Under a timer, simple next to hard looks friendly. The fix is the sentence test, which exposes the reversed meaning instantly.
Mistake: choosing a word that merely sounds related. Words that share a topic are not synonyms. The fix is to require the meaning, not the association, to match.
Mistake: rushing the first option. The fix is simply to read all four; it costs one second and removes most careless losses.
Vocabulary range is the cheapest way to make writing sharper. Being able to reach for purchase instead of buy, or demonstrate instead of show, changes the register of a paragraph without changing its meaning.
Do I need to install anything? No. It runs in any modern browser.
Is there only one correct synonym? In English, rarely. This game uses one intended match per word, chosen as the closest and most standard, and the other three options are not synonyms of the prompt.
What age is it for? Roughly grades 4 and up, or any learner building vocabulary.
